Pillow Talk with Jiho Jun

Welcome to part one of 'Pillow Talk', a series of intimate conversations in bed with friends of Dehei. Today we curl up with Jiho Yun - Mum, one half of Walk in the Park, and Founder of the freshly launched Common Garden.

Pillow Talk with Jiho Jun

From Film, to Food to Photography - Jiho has worn many hats over the years, all at which involve creating something from the heart. Her Husband Sam started Walk In The Park, creating handmade wood-turning art and design objects using ethically sourced NZ timbers, which is when Jiho rediscovered her love of Photography and Styling. Always with the best items (usually from Korea)  that friends too wanted to get their hands on, it wasn't long before she decided to start a store of her own 'Common Garden' (formerly Jiho Store) hosting a collection of unique and playful objects that nurture designs from all over the world.

Besides being incredibly creative with amazing attention to detail, Jiho is a dear friend of ours and if you are also lucky enough to know her you will know she is loyal, dependable and funny - not to mention cute with a side of sass (the perfect combination we think!) She is an all round great person - get to know more about Jiho below.

Tell us a little bit about yourself and what you do.

I am a part-time photographer (work mostly for friends), running a little online store, married to a woodturner and a mom to a funny little 2yo.

How would people describe you in 3 words?

What do you think? ; )

Who/what inspires you and your work?

The sun!

Always grateful to have the most beautiful sunlight in NZ. I hardly use lighting when I am photographing and rely on the light from nature. On a Sunny day, I get so much energy and work always goes well.

First thing you do when you wake up?

Say Morena to the little one and make breakfast and brew a coffee.

Something not many people know about you?

I studied film directing in my country (Korea) and worked in the film industry for a few years. And also studied culinary in NZ and worked as a chef for a while before opening an online store.

What are you currently reading, watching, and listening to?

We (my little family) recently visited our home country in Korea and my husband Sam started to listen to the songs we used to listen to together, it is a Korean band called Rollercoaster. Old but still so satisfying to listen to.

Go to bed early or stay up late?

I used to go to bed really late before I was having a baby but now all I want is to go to bed as soon as I can haha

Get up early or sleep in?

Would love to sleep in. But I get up when the little one is up. Normally around 6 - 6.30am which never happened before having a baby :)

Midnight snack of choice?

Night snacks are Chippies always, love NZ crisps!!

Last thing you do before you go to sleep?

Throwback for the day and watch my daughter's daily photos and videos I took.

Do you have any bedtime rituals?

Not really, just get excited haha

What is your current relationship with rest / sleep?

Essential. It is common sense that sleep is essential to every human but I think I especially love the bed time :) I always get excited and run into bed with tiny little scream!

Favourite things in your bedroom?

2 fav things...

1. The Rimu bed frame that my husband Sam bought from Trademe and he added some hand turned wood details on it. So special!

2. Flat sheet. I never used a flat sheet before until very recently, I got one because my friend's parents stayed at my place one time and I wanted to make the bed look nice.

Since then I love the flat sheet so much. The thin layer of fabric makes a huge difference in the temperature of the bed. I often turn the heater off since I have a flat sheet it’s super cosy!

What can’t you sleep without?

I have to have a cuddle pillow. I had one that I used for so long which it was hard to let go but I got a new little disc cushion from NZ maker Klay a couple of years ago and can not sleep without it. Probably I won't be able to sleep without Dehei flat sheets now too!
